CHW Center for Research & Evaluation

The CHW Center for Research and Evaluation (CHW-CRE) is the first and only national research and evaluation organization led by Community Health Workers (CHWs) and longtime allies. CHW-CRE grew out of the CHW Common Indicators Project, an ongoing effort founded in 2015 to develop and use common process and outcome indicators chosen by CHWs to measure CHW practice. In 2023, we embraced a new name and an expanded mission. We aim to 1) promote use of common process and outcome indicators chosen by CHWs; 2) build capacity among CHWs and researcher/evaluators to use best practices in CHW research and evaluation; and 3) conduct and model CHW-led research and evaluation. Intermediate outcomes of our work will include more valid, reliable, and usable results; a strengthened and empowered CHW workforce; and increased participation of marginalized communities in research and evaluation. These outcomes will lead to improved community health, increased health equity, and a more just society.
